  1. Create a list, RIP…

Ok, one of the major, and we’re guessing more controversial changes we’re making is to remove the ability for users to create their own topics.

I’ll take some time to explain why…

Frankly, the vast majority of the topics people were creating were one of two things - either duplicates of topics we already had, or ‘my favourite somethings’.

We hold our hands up; they’re both our fault. In the first case the thing that was supposed to tell you if similar lists already existed on Ditto was, well, a bit rubbish, and in the second case, we obviously didn’t explain ourselves well enough. If you wanted to create a list of ‘My favourite movies’, the idea was you voted on ‘The best movies ever’, thereby creating a list of your favourites whilst at the same time contributing to an overall list of everyone’s favourite movies.

The new site - hopefully - is much more explicit about this. You can read much more about our reasons here

We think by making it much clearer how to create lists of ‘my favourite movies’, we’ve removed the confusion that was behind well over half of our user-created lists.

Now we don’t want to stop people creating new topics, but now, if you’ve got a good idea for a new topic, please email us at feedback@ditto.net. If you do have a good idea for something that’s not there already, we can create it for you (you’ll still get the credit), or possibly even give you special admin rights to create it yourself.

Thanks for listening. Any moans, questions or complaints, leave ‘em below, or if you prefer privacy, email us at feedback@ditto.net.

  2. New Quizzes for July (and other random fun)

    Hello, good people of Ditto,

I’m pleased to announce some new quiz action for this month: we’ve got questions for music lovers, a quiz for film buffs and a fiendish test for the gamers amongst you. There’s a whopping £50 worth of Amazon vouchers on offer as a prize for each quiz.

In other news, you can win £100 worth of Forbidden Planet vouchers in our expert-level horror quiz, with more gruesome excitement to be had with our list of cinema’s grisliest death scenes (thanks, Empire!), the greatest films of George A. Romero and my new favourite list- classic 1970s Horror trumps. I urge you to vote for Maggot because, although generally weak, he’s quite a looker. Speaking of lookers, Pat has started a list about films with massive kill counts which is proving to be quite controversial due to his stringent rules about ‘kill count’ versus ‘body count’.

If that’s all a bit too dark for you, there’s still time to win some ace pop goodies in our Alphabeat quiz, vote for the best 80s Hip Hop videos or relive those times when you’ve held a lighter aloft with our list of the greatest live albums

    Enjoy!

  3. Utterly, utterly irrelevant post for Google Reader users

Go to your google reader homepage.

Hit [up] [up] [down] [down] [left] [right] [left] [right] [B] [A]

(if anyone recognises that they win the geek-of-the-year award, hands down)

Then laugh. At least someone at Google’s still  got a sense of humour…

  4. Hello from tmothy

Seeing as we’re all in a community-minded spirit, I’d like to introduce myself; I work on the marketing / content side of things, have six planets in Scorpio and usually bring my own sandwiches. My days are spent asking Pat questions, making John cups of tea (two bags and a little milk, for the record) and creating joyous lists about fun stuff (ie. clowns, scarecrows and murder.

In other news, I’m a musician and filmmaker (usually making short films about bands and monsters); you can find links to all my nonsense on my profile

So, while I still have your attention you should definitely check out the music of Man Man, Mississippi Witch, Holy F*ck and Clara Rockmore.

    Enjoy!

  5. Allow me to introduce myself…

Well, I think we’ve known each other for long enough now for me to introduce myself. My name is John, and I’m nominally in charge of all the community and content stuff on Ditto at the moment. The good bits, anyway. All the rest is someone else’s fault.

My background is in magazine writing; pop music for Smash Hits, sport for Zoo, and loads of other rubbish for loads of people. The last magazine I worked on only lasted two days, so for me at least, Ditto is already a resounding success.

I’ll be badgering the rest of the team, some of whom you may have met already, to introduce themselves as well - though you can always check out their Ditto profiles (see the links at the end of posts) to get a scarily accurate snapshot of their taste. (Best you don’t look at Pat’s. Pat’s just… odd.)

    See you round,

    John
