For those that care we used Flex 3.0 (boo no Silverlight) talking to our .NET 3.5 service layer. I used the HTTPService component in Flex and the REST version of our API.

  2. Ditto beta public API available

Hi, I’m Mike, I do a lot of the “behind the scenes” work on the Ditto site, which basically means that most of the time other people take the credit for my work. Occasionally they do let me out into the public eye however, so here I am.

I’m pleased to announce that Ditto now has a fledgling public API ready for all you aspiring developers out there. It’s a closed Beta at the moment, so you’ll need an API key from  us directly at the moment (see About API Keys for more information).

You can check out the documentation at http://api.ditto.net, though I apologise in advance for its fairly sparse nature. Currently the API only exposes public, read-only information - that is to say, although you can retrieve the current chart positions for a list, you can’t vote things up and down.

We’ll be adding features to, and improving, the api all the time, so let us know if there’s anything in particular that you would like added. Methods that require authentication (e.g. voting, leaving comments) are probably a way off for the time being, so be patient on that front!

    Thanks!

  3. RSS and Ditto

Seeing as I recently fessed up to breaking the Latest List RSS fed I thought it was a good time to ask if you, our users, use RSS and would like to see more data from Ditto as an RSS feed.

Currently we offer a feed of new lists, and a feed on each individual list that will keep you up-to-date with the comments, (”Star Wars Films: Pick the best” for example).

If you can think of other things you think would make a good RSS feed tell us, via this post, and we will see what we can do about it.

  4. Honey I broke the RSS url

Ooops, my bad, I broke the Latest Lists RSS, for the those of you that use it (Hi, Mum) sorry.

For those of you that don’t I have two things to say to you

    1. This apology is not meant for you
    2. Why aren’t you using it!? It’s a great way of keeping up with what lists are being added to the site.

OK, so in all seriousness we are shipping a bug fix release this week after another full release last friday and part of that release will fix the current subscribers to the Latest Lists RSS feed. I changed the url structure to remove as much as possible from the querystring to the url path.

For those of you still reading that means the url

    http://www.ditto.net/Lists?pt=Unspecified&p=0&ft=ThisMonth has become

    http://www.ditto.net/Lists/Popular/All/This-Month

  5. Voting Etiquette

    Technorati Tags:

This is something that has caused a few disagreements here in the Ditto office. What is the etiquette that should be considered when voting on lists or should we just all just do as we feel?

Take the Best John Woo films list for example, I feel perfectly happy voting for

    1. Hard Boiled
    2. The Killer
    3. M:I-2
    4. Face Off

In that order and voting Hard Target down.

My intent is to say that the first four are good examples of John Woo and the latter is not. Hopefully this might help someone new to John Woo to find the best of his films.

The debate comes with a list like The Greatest Ever Flight Sim. I know jack all about flight sims, but I do know some that I enjoyed, so I added them and voted them up. These could well look like a recommendation to someone looking for a flight sim to  buy. Trouble is they would be foolish because like I said I know nothing about flight sims. So what does one do? Only vote on lists where you know a fair bit about the topic?

OK, so here is another question, take the list Best albums of the 80s, I love Guns n’ Roses and am a big Appetite fan so consider it a disgrace (ok bit melodramatic, but I have been called a drama queen before) that Michael Jackson is currently knocking Appetite off first place. So what do I do? I could just go in vote everything in the top 20 down to help Appetite? Is that wrong, WDYT?

We are not suggesting a voting rule book here I am just wondering what you guys think.

As Deeloren would say Rock on!

    Pat
